Giulia Gai

PhD student in polar marine mammals ecotoxicology at the University of Groningen

Giulia Gai

Giulia is an ecotoxicologist specialized in polar top predators. She previously worked for the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, Norway, studying PFAS temporal trends in polar bears and Arctic foxes. During her time at NPI, she had the opportunity to work in the lab at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and at NILU (Tromsø). She recently obtained a PhD position at the Arctic Centre, University of Groningen (RUG), with her project proposal on Antarctic marine mammals ecotoxicology. She will study the differences in legacy and emerging contaminants concentration depending on species, diet and area of study, discussing the impact of the increasing human activities in Antarctica. She will develop a method for standardized temporal trends studies on Antarctic predators and permit comparisons between the Arctic and the Antarctic. This knowledge will be of great importance for informing policy makers, the wider public and the treaty systems that regulate the chemicals in question, contributing to the broader debate on human-Antarctic relationships.

She joined APECS NL board at the beginning of 2024. She herself read about the PhD position obtained at RUG from APECS social media, and thus she believes in the importance of the work carried out by APECS NL, which aims to connect polar researchers around the Netherlands (but not only) and to support polar early career scientists in the first steps of their career.
