SUMMARY:Main Drivers of Recent Record-Breaking Climate Extremes in Antarctica
DESCRIPTION:Main Drivers of Recent Record-Breaking Climate Extremes in Antarctica\nby Raul Cordero Carrasco\nUniversity of Groningen\, Campus Fryslân\n\nDate and time: 26 February\, 19:30-21:00\nLocation: Arctic Centre\, Aweg 30\, Groningen & Google Meets\nLanguage: English\n\n\n\n\nDr. Carrasco: “In February 2023 the sea ice extent around Antarctica dropped to 1.79 million square kilometers setting a satellite-era record low for the second straight year. Recent anomalies in the Antarctic sea ice\, both high and low\, underscore the imperative for additional research into the underlying factors contributing to interannual sea ice changes. I have used reanalysis data to investigate the relationship between the strength of the polar vortex and the sea ice extent around Antarctica. I focused on the last two decades\, a period marked by significant shifts in stratospheric zonal flow\, tropospheric westerly winds\, and sea ice cover. My findings suggest that polar vortex dynamics and changes in the tropospheric circulation have played a role in these unprecedented records.”\n\n\n\nProgramme\n19:15 – doors open\, coffee and tea\n19:30 – first part\n20:15 – short break\n20:45 – second part\n21:00 – questions\n21:15 – end of event\n\n\n\nRegistration\nIn-person visitors do not need to register. They can simply show up at 19:15-19:30 at the Arctic Centre.\n\nOnline attendees must register via this form. You will receive the Google Meets link on 26 February in the afternoon. (Please wait patiently). Please register before before Monday 26 February 13:00 – late registrations may only receive the link a few minutes before the lecture starts.\n\nAdmission\n\n€ 3 for physical attendees (includes coffee\, tea and cookies) – paid at the entrance by transfer or cash\n€ 2 for online attendees – payment information will be emailed with the Google Meet link that you will receive on 26 February.\n€ 1 for students.\n \nAbout IMAKA\n\nIMAKA is the Arctic Centre’s volunteer outreach organisation. We have invited polar scientists\, artists or other experts to guest-lecture to a general audience about once every month for about 20 years. IMAKA means ‘maybe’ in Greenlandic and is a central word in their vocabulary and philosophy\, as “one never knows for sure” in the Arctic. What we do know for sure\, though\, is that IMAKA has been forced to switch digital and\, rebranded as e-MAKA\, we embrace this opportunity to invite guest lecturers from farther afield. Most of our lectures are in Dutch\, but some in English.\n\n\n\n\nContact: imaka.info@gmail.com.\nhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/imakagroningen/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/imakagroningen/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/ImakaGroningen\n\nYou can sign up for the newsletter (6 issues per year) here: https://www.rug.nl/research/arctisch-centrum/outreach/imaka/aanmeldformulier-imaka

SUMMARY:Polar Symposium: postponed to March 17th!
DESCRIPTION:We regret to inform you that due to the new COVID-19 measures in force from 13 November until 4 December\, NWO NPP\, APECS NL & DAC had to decide to postpone our polar symposium planned on 2 December to 17 March 2022. This has been a difficult decision for us\, but we unanimously agreed it was the right one under the current circumstances. The symposium is not lost\, only postponed.\n\n\n\nEmployers at the moment are once again urging their personnel to work as much as possible at home and only to come to their office when it is absolutely necessary. Visiting a symposium during the current surge of COVID infections nationwide does not qualify for many of us as an absolute necessity. We start to receive signals from participants and our support staff they feel not comfortable attending this event. To stay within current COVID restrictions we could have made adjustments and cancel the socializing parts of our programme. But in doing so we would lose one of the most important parts of our symposium objectives. Facilitating meeting and greeting each other in an informal way as a networking polar community. We were not prepared to do so.\n\n\n\nWe hope and trust you understand and support our decision. In a short time will we contact all registered\nparticipant with a request to register again for a new date and an adjusted programme. We give it another chance\, we hope you are with us again on 17 March next year!!!

SUMMARY:EGU Cryosphere & APECS Multilingual Networking Event (Dutch)
\n~~~~ \nDo you also find it a pity that (scientific) networking events are almost exclusively offered in English? Would you also like to share your interests in polar science and polar environments in general in your own language and build your network in your own country? Then don’t hesitate and register for the EGU / APECS Multilingual Netwrokign Event! \nThe Cryosphere Division of the EGU – together with APECS\, the Early career Glaciology Group (EGG)\, the UK Polar Network\, and the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS) – organizes an online event with different breakout rooms for all languages present\, with a quiz and networking activities. This way you’ll be able to share your work\, findings\, stories\, poems\, etc. in your own language with polar researchers and enthusiast. Or use this opportunity to brush up your skills in a language that is not your own 😉 \nFind more information on the website of the EGU and APECS. It is necessary to register in order to join the meeting. We hope this offers a nice and safe alternative now that the Polar Symposium is postponed to March 17th!
