Supporting early career polar researchers and educators

Education and awareness

APECS is an international organization dedicated to the development and promotion of young polar researchers.

One of our goals is to inform and raise public awareness of the importance of polar research and the cryosphere to our planet. The cryosphere is the part of the earth that consists of ice, snow, glaciers and permafrost. It plays a crucial role in the climate system and influences biodiversity, the water cycle and human activities.

To achieve our goal, we organize various educational and outreach activities, such as:

  • Developing and distributing educational materials about polar research and the cryosphere, such as lesson plans, brochures, posters and videos.

  • Facilitating interaction between polar researchers and schools, museums, media and other stakeholders, for example through online webinars, guest lectures, exhibitions and interviews.

  • Supporting and encouraging young polar researchers to communicate their research to a wide audience, for example through training, workshops, competitions and prizes.

  • Collaborating with other organizations involved in polar education and outreach, such as the International Polar Year (IPY), the Polar Educators International (PEI) and the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS).

Through these activities, we hope to inspire and engage the public in polar research and the cryosphere, and contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of these unique and fragile regions of our Earth.

Career support

If you are interested in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, their natural systems, their history and their future, APECS is the place for you.

At APECS you can participate in a wide range of activities that help you to increase your knowledge and skills, expand your network and advance your career.

As a member of APECS, you become part of a vibrant and diverse community of people who are passionate about the Arctic and willing to share their experiences and insights. You can also contribute to the mission of APECS by volunteering for one of our working groups or national committees.

Participate in:

  • Webinars on current pool themes, given by experts from various disciplines and sectors.

  • Workshops on research methods, data analysis, communication, leadership and more.

  • Mentoring programs where you are paired with an experienced polar researcher or educator who can give you advice and feedback.

  • Online platforms where you can present your research, get feedback and discuss with other members of the APECS community.

  • Opportunities to get involved in international projects, conferences and events related to the polar regions.

Connecting the Arctic with the World.

International Collaboration

One of the main goals of APECS is to promote interdisciplinary and international collaboration among polar researchers.

APECS is an international network of young researchers involved in polar sciences. One of the main goals of APECS is to promote interdisciplinary and international collaboration among polar researchers.

Why is this important? Because the polar regions are complex and dynamic systems that affect many aspects of the Earth and life. To understand and protect the polar regions, we need knowledge from various disciplines, such as biology, geology, climatology, sociology and more. Moreover, the polar regions are not isolated areas, but connected to other regions and processes on the planet. Therefore, it is essential to collaborate with researchers from different countries and cultures, who can bring different perspectives and experiences.

How does APECS facilitate this collaboration? APECS organizes various activities and events to strengthen and expand the network of polar researchers. For example:

  • Online webinars and workshops on various pool-related topics, where experts from different disciplines share their knowledge and insights.

  • Mentoring programs where experienced polar researchers offer their advice and guidance to young researchers who want to develop their career.

  • Conferences and symposia where young researchers can present their research and receive feedback from their peers and senior colleagues.

  • Outreach activities where young researchers can share their passion for the polar regions with the general public and inspire the next generation.

If you are interested in participating in these activities or want to learn more about APECS, we invite you to visit our website and join our community. Together we can take polar science to the next level!
