I am a microbiologist with an interest in marine microalgae and DMSP production, particularly in sea ice habitats. DMSP (dimethylsulfoniopropionate) is a sulphur compound produced by microalgae. By conversion into the gas DMS (dimethylsulfoxide), it can ultimately end up in the atmosphere, where its oxidation products serve as cloud condensation nuclei and impact the climate in remote regions such as the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean. Currently, I am working on laboratory experiments with temperate and polar species, as well as on DMSP production in the Southern Ocean. With my research, I want to contribute to the understanding of how the algal sulphur and carbon cycles are linked in the Southern Ocean and how DMS(P) concentrations will develop in the ocean and ultimately in the atmosphere under changing climate conditions.
